5 ways to add colour to your kitchen
31 October 2022
Whether bright or subtle, colours can give a new feel to any room in your home. They express individuality and character and create atmosphere, which makes choosing the right colour an important task.
Some questions to ask yourself during the design phase include:
-
Am I trying to make a small room look bigger?
-
Do I want specific architectural details to be highlighted?
-
How much natural light is there, and where does it fall?
-
What colour will I still like in 10 or 20 years’ time?
Here are 5 creative ways to bring colour and life back into your kitchen, featuring recently completed kitchens in St Albans and beyond to help illustrate these ideas in action.
#1 Splashbacks
Combine colour with practicality when it comes to tiles and splashbacks. Since they come in an array of colours and designs, there is something to suit all tastes depending on whether you want to harmonise or make a statement.
It’s important to choose the right material to ensure quality and longevity. For this kitchen in St Albans, we incorporated a bronze mirror splashback by Deco Gaze which fits wonderfully with the black steel and cognac oak colour combination and is matched by metallic finishes and accessories around the room.
#2 Try Next125
If colour is going to play a key role in your next kitchen, it is worth considering the next125 collection range, which is divided into three colour categories: essential, elegant and exceptional. These colours are designed to go together, making it much easier for you to come up with your own individual colour combination.
Next125 offers a range of top-quality high gloss, matt velvet and satin lacquer systems that reflect the broad colour spectrum of the premium brand. You can visit a working Next125 kitchen in our St Albans showroom by booking an appointment or pop in Monday – Friday, 9.30 – 4.30pm.
#3 Colourful furniture
One approach to coloured furniture is to choose a main colour and pair it with one or more accent colours (or different shades of the same colour) or to work in blocks. For example, you could plan the kitchen island furniture in one colour and tall units in another or choose a different coloured worktop to create an attractive contrast.
In this stunning kitchen in Radlett on the right, a contrast has been made between Deep Blue Velvet units and white-veined worktops and island in Carrara Unistone.
The Schüller range offers a huge range of colours and materials to choose from when it comes to furniture, including glass-fronted, veneered, or solid wood doors. For this Schüller kitchen in Wheathampstead, our client opted for this beautiful and rich Truffle Brown coloured furniture in Satin Matt Lacquer.

#4 Colourful accessories
Colourful accessories like light fixtures, kitchen appliances and bar stools can be used to introduce or match accent colours in the overall design. It is also possible to add colour using recess elements such as open shelving or a breakfast bar.
We love the industrial look of this kitchen in Harpenden with furniture in Graphite complemented by bronze and wooden accents plus a splash of colour with these velvet lime green bar stool seats.
#5 A feature wall
If you’re hesitant about bringing colour into your kitchen furniture, it might suit you better to add colour through a vibrant feature wall. It’s much quicker to paint a wall or change the décor than to replace a whole kitchen!
Great options for a feature wall include a wall with open shelves or a wall with architectural features that you wish to highlight. To help decide on a colour for their feature wall (on the left), our client in St Albans took their time trying multiple samples in different areas of their kitchen to see how they changed at different times of the day.
