Matt or Gloss Kitchen: How to Choose?

31 August 2022

Choosing a gloss or matt finish for your furniture can significantly change the overall impact and feel of your dream kitchen.

For you, this might be an easy decision – some people have an instant preference for either a gloss or matt finish. If not, read ahead for some helpful tips on how to choose.

Step #1

Whilst matt kitchens may have overtaken gloss kitchens in recent years, both styles have their pros and cons. As a first step, it is a good idea to ask yourself these initial questions:

  • How large is the space?
  • How much natural light does it get throughout the day?
  • Do I want to have a modern or traditional style?

In general, gloss kitchens can work well for smaller spaces since they reflect the light and add the illusion of extra space.

However, if your space gets a lot of natural light, you might prefer a matt finish which will retain the solidity and depth of the same colour whatever the light (unlike gloss kitchens).

If you’re set on a traditional style, a matt finish makes the most sense whereas for a modern, contemporary kitchen you could easily opt for either a matt or gloss finish (or mix and match!).

If you’re still not sure, Step #2 is to consider the general pros and cons of each style.

1. Gloss

  • Reflective surfaces can brighten up your kitchen
  • Creates illusion of larger space
  • Best suited to contemporary kitchens
  • Tends to show up fingerprints, smudges and scratches more than matt finish

2. Matt

  • Can make kitchens look smaller than they are
  • Flat but stylish, sophisticated look
  • Adds depth to any chosen colour
  • Maintains a consistent and solid appearance from any angle
  • Can be used to ‘blend in’ or make an impact, depending on colour scheme
