Spotlight on: Vertical radiators
15 May 2023
You may have spotted these super versatile, vertical radiators in kitchens and utility rooms completed by us in St Albans, Harpenden, Watford and beyond.
These radiators come in a range of colours and can add a modern, contemporary touch to your kitchen’s heat source. Depending on the colour and style you choose, they can also become a stylish design feature in their own right!
Below we take a look at 3 main benefits to using vertical radiators in your kitchen space, illustrated by some images in action from recently completed projects.
What is a vertical radiator?
The horizontal radiator is the familiar long radiator that everyone knows. They are usually situated underneath windows, but they can often get blocked by the drawing of curtains and furniture, like sofas. Turn this on its side and you have the vertical radiator, which is directed upwards!
The benefits of a vertical radiator include…
- #1 Maximising Space
- #2 Serving as a heat rack
- #3 Great design feature
#1 Maximising space
A vertical radiator is easily customisable to any room, and often frees up floor space. This is particularly important in a small space and especially in kitchens.
Because it will only use up a very small part of the room, it creates more openness with other decisions such as where to situate your oven and kitchen furniture, without having to additionally work around the (usually, fixed) position of a horizontal radiator.
#2 Serving as a heating rack
Depending on which style of radiator you opt for, the horizontal bars can double up as heating racks for towels – especially in a bathroom or laundry room.
With vertical bars, the air also tends to heat to a higher temperature and moves upwards faster, creating a greater sense of warmth in any room given its height and position.
#3 Great design feature
Vertical radiators come in a great range of styles and colours. There are traditional-looking column radiators to suit period style homes and sleek, flat-panelled radiators for a more modern finish.
You can either choose a colour to blend in – as if the radiator were invisible – or to stand out, so that it becomes a feature and focal point in the room.
Here are some vertical radiators in action in kitchens that we have completed in St Albans and London:
1. Seymour Road, St Albans
For this beautiful Scandinavian-style kitchen in St Albans, we incorporated vertical radiators into both the kitchen and utility room – making fabulous use of limited space and blending into the colour scheme of each room.
In this image (right) you can see the radiator featured next to the custom-made seating area for the client’s dining room, facing the cooking area.
2. Nimrod Close, St Albans
We love how the vertical radiator in this kitchen matches the industrial look of the furniture in this striking kitchen in Longacres (left) and also below, in this renovation in Nimrod Close, St Albans with a similar colour-scheme, you can see the radiator situated in a cosy corner of the room to match the snack table and chairs.

3. Brewhouse Yard, London
Floor space comes at a premium for apartments in central London! This was the case for this kitchen we completed in Brewhouse Yard.
To overcome this hurdle, we made the most of the ceiling height to maximise space which included extra tall wall units in conjunction with top boxes stacked on top of the tall fridge and also – this sleek black vertical radiator which looks great alongside the Walnut and Black lacquer furniture!
